The Cathar castles

Château de Puilaurens- Châteaux cathares- Rennes les bains -Chambres d'hôtes 11Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Puivert, Puilaurens,.....

The hills of Languedoc are dotted with vertiginous fortresses, also called 'citadels of vertigo'. The Cathar castles are the remains of the Albigensian crusade, in the 12th century, and are witnesses to the tragic end of the Cathar heretics. Almost all the castles of the Cathar country are visited about an hour from our bed and breakfast: the Cité de Carcassonne, the castle of Puivert: appointment of troubadours, musicians and poets of the eleventh century (museum to discover), the castle of Montségur: last bastion of the Cathar resistance where more than two hundred faithful were burned alive, the castle of Peyrepertuse and Quéribus very close to the village of Cucugnan by making the loop through the Gorges de Galamus and visiting the Hermitage or by the castle of Puilaurens and the mountain pass of Pierre Lys.

On the way to the castles of Quéribus, Peyrepertuse and Puilaurens, you will cross the Gorges de Galamus narrow road cut into the rocks and which allows the passage between the department of Aude and Pyrénnées Orientales.

The region is also known for the exploits of the Aude Resistance, during the last war, with the actions of Alet-les-Bains and the Picaussel Maquis..
